Universal search across mail and enterprise apps further reinforces my opinion.

Yossi - it's a year later and we're not yet seeing Chrome challenge in the Netbook market. I think Linux distros are more relevant in the enterprise back-office / infrastructure space than the consumer market. Consumers mostly want "plug and play" which sadly still means MS and Mac.

Getting the accreditation wasn't actually that difficult. Mainly because my friend was editor of the SA Times back then. I convinced her that it was a reach-for-a-dream type situation, and I mentioned in my application to ASO that we don't often have South Africans in the Tour. The funny thing is, I thought I wouldn't push my luck and ask for accreditation for the whole tour, so only asked for the London stages, and picked another random stage - Montpellier - because I'd been there before and I thought it would be easy to get to. In the end I couldn't go - and that's where Robbie won! Fortunately I was still on a high from the London stages, so tried not to let it get to me. Pretty sure my pass wouldn't have let me anywhere near the finish line anyway. But still.

Don't know if you saw the Tour of Britain Cav pics? They're not great by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm very fond of them. Was very lucky with those. Got another pass for that London stage/prologue. (Not so easy these days - need indemnity insurance etc.) After Robbie Hunter started his time-trial, I just wandered onto the finishing stretch (can't believe they just let me in there), took this pic http://www.flickr.com/photos/sisitv/3780596238/, wandered to the bit where they were cooling down, and caught this http://www.flickr.com/photos/sisitv/3779784357/in/set-72157601948878699/ - not knowing he'd won the stage. Funny!

The press card was only valid for two years, and the SA Times died and got taken over by TNT. Might approach a paper in SA next year.

Just thought of something - you're not into rugby and/or golf by any chance? I'm looking for someone to help me shoot a charity golf day. (2008 pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sisitv/sets/72157608583888342/with/2994365637/)
It's on the 5th October, and will be a fairly long day. If you're keen, let me know and I'll send you some details. (Assuming you live in the UK!)

Christine, thanks for the comment. How did you manage to blag a press badge? That would be amazing.

I empathise with the bladder story. First year I caught the tour (2005) I was an inexperienced kippie having just moved to the UK a few weeks previously. I found a spot opposite where you stood (i.e. corner of Rue de Rivoli, but outside corner rather than inside) at about 07h30 thinking it would be a great day out. At about 10h00 I found out we were "boxed in", i.e. if we left our little area the gendarmerie weren't letting us back in. Well - I was knyping for the next 8 hours, it wasn't pretty. But, I had been watching on tele since 1989 and wasn't giving up my boyhood dream of seeing the yellow jersey come past just in case of a bit of bladder infection! That's what motivated me buying hospitality seats the following year.

I looked at some of your shots, they're pretty amazing. I'm particularly loving the young Cav in T mobile gear.

Great article Dave, and great pics! Pretty sure I discovered your Flickr pics way back in 2007 (after that year's Tour de France). Was lucky enough to blag a press pass for the London stage that year, which helped a great deal. Such a great experience. (I'm sure I looked like a stalker.)
Went to the final stage for the first time this year, and knew from the start I couldn't go to the Champs Elysees unless I was with a big group. (Smallest bladder in the world!)
In the end I chose to stand on the inside corner of the Rue de Rivoli and the Tuileries garden, as they exit the tunnel. I thought it wouldn't be too crowded, and that they'd have to slow down slightly approaching the turn. And, most importantly, that I would be near a loo! Was perfect really. I only went there at noon. There weren't too many people. And the ones I met were perfectly happy to keep my spot if I had to go anywhere. Great vibe as well. Near a bar. And lots of hard core Norwegian fans. Strangely enough, I didn't think about the photography side of it until it was all over. So my pics are rubbish (flickr.com/photos/sisitv), but next time I'll be better prepared!
We're thinking about going to the grand départ next year (it starts near a friend's place in france), and we might do one of the mountain stages as well. (Though we say that EVERY year.)
